UC Berkeley: The View from the Sea: Oceans in World History

I’ll be teaching this June at the Summer Institute for k-12 Educators, titled The View from the Sea: Oceans in World History. This event is organized by the University of California Berkeley, Office of Resources for International and Area Studies (ORIAS) June 26 – 28, 2017.

I will be giving a lecture on “An Oceanic Gaze” and we will exploring ways of seeing science, culture and geography from the South Pacific, offering a different perspective from the dominant continental gaze, regarding coastal resources, boundary drawing and rights in ways that blur authoritative land/sea divides.
