I am Katherine Sammler, a PhD candidate in the School of Geography and Development at The University of Arizona. I will begin as an assistant professor at California State University Maritime Academy in August, 2016. My research interrogates ideas and practices of territory and sovereignty in non-terrestrial places, such as oceans and seabeds, the atmosphere and outer space. I utilize political and physical geography, critical theory, island/ocean studies and spatial analysis. I am currently writing my dissertation on vertical territory and environmental governance of seabed mining in New Zealand and the broader Pacific.
